"I am waiting for Jonathan Cranston to finish pre-hibernation checks on a family tortoise at his veterinary practice in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. There are orderly shelves of fish food and dog chew-toys, not to mention leaflets about canine bad breath, in the reception area. A dalmatian comes in, sniffs the surgical air, then sits and waits patiently for a jab. Such is the gentle caseload of a vet working on the edge of the Cotswolds."
